THE FULL REVIEW
CUSTOM INTERNAL TOOLS WITHOUT HIRING A DEVELOPER.
Base44 builds fully functional web apps from plain English prompts, including the UI, backend, database, and authentication, with no coding required. It was acquired by Wix for $80 million and is powered by Claude Sonnet 4 and Gemini 2.5 Pro. For fashion brands the use cases are concrete: custom line sheet generators, wholesale order portals, sample tracking dashboards, content approval workflows, and product brief builders. The Professional plan runs $100 per month.
The catch is scope and ownership. This is for internal tooling, not customer-facing product, and an app someone builds in an afternoon still needs someone to keep it current after that afternoon. Pick one painful manual process and prove the value there first.
WHERE IT EARNS ITS PLACE
Line sheet generation, wholesale order portals, sample tracking dashboards, content approval workflows, and the internal tools small teams keep rebuilding by hand every season.
WHERE WE WOULD NOT USE IT
Customer-facing ecommerce, anything your PLM or ERP already does well, or apps nobody on the team is assigned to own and update.
WHERE IT FITS
MAP
Pick the manual process that hurts most, usually the line sheet.
CONNECT
Point Base44 at your product data in Airtable or elsewhere.
AUTOMATE
Describe the app in plain English and let Base44 build it.
MAINTAIN
Assign an owner to update the app as the season changes.
CREATIVE DIRECTOR'S NOTE
THE LINE SHEET ALONE JUSTIFIES IT.
The use case I keep coming back to is the line sheet. Every season, design teams rebuild them manually in InDesign or PowerPoint and it is painful. A Base44 app that pulls product data from Airtable, populates a formatted template, and generates a PDF for wholesale buyers is a one-afternoon build. That alone justifies the subscription for most small to mid-size brands.
